During America Saves Week (February 21-28), FDIC Chairman Sheila C. Bair urged consumers across the nation to resolve to open a savings account or boost their existing saving. In an op-ed piece by Chairman Bair and in a video, she advised consumers to create a better future for themselves by having an emergency savings fund to cover unexpected bills and to save for priorities such as a down payment on a home or a child's education. Homeowner Loses Job but Keeps Home
2,000+ Borrowers Helped at Nevada HOPE NOW Homeownership Preservation Events
Representatives from more than a dozen mortgage servicers, plus several local HUD-approved housing counselors, were on hand last week in Nevada to help more than 2,000 struggling homeowners with their mortgages at a HOPE NOW homeownership preservation event. One couple, Michael and Tanya, from Henderson, NV, attended the Las Vegas HOPE NOW event last week. Mike recently lost his job and his wife Tanya was starting her new cleaning business. They fell three months behind on their mortgage which prompted a call from their lender, Citi, since they had never been late with their payments before. Citi told them about the Making Home Affordable program and encouraged them to apply right away. They attended the document collection event in Las Vegas, submitted their paperwork and were approved on the spot for a trial loan modification that reduced their monthly payment by 52%.
“This will help a lot as I look for work and my wife launches her new business. We will do anything to keep our house,” said Michael. View Michael and Tanya's full story here.
These homeownership preservation events continue with events scheduled for April 17 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Virginia; and August 28-30 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island, NY. For more information about upcoming events, visit www.HOPENOW.com or www.MakingHomeAffordable.gov.
